Answer: Addition vs Edition

With examples from the X-Files.

With words that sound similar, it can sometimes be confusing to decide which one is correct when using in a sentence. Take addition and edition, for example. Although these words sound alike, they have completely different meanings. If used incorrectly, the sentence or dialogue would be taken out of context and perhaps even puzzled over by the reader.

Let's look at the definitions of these words. Addition means the act or process of adding or uniting; the result of adding; or something added, such as an addition to a house or building. Addition can also be used as an idiom, such as "In addition to" which is the same as saying, "as well as" or "besides."

Mulder knew the numbers didn't add up, but the chances that this was the building they were looking for gave him incentive to disregard the results of his rudimentary additon efforts and just go with it.

"Looks like someone built an addition to the building," Mulder said in an aside to Scully. He glanced at her for a moment, then added, "Could be big enough to hide that prototype ship Carlos told us about."

Scully nodded, although Mulder could tell she still didn't quite believe there ever was a prototype ship. "Let's check it out before we make any assumptions," she said quietly. "There could be something else in there in addition to that 'ship'."

On the other hand, edition is defined as one of a series of printings of the same book, newspaper, etc., each issued at a different time and differing from another by alterations, additions, etc.; the whole number of impressions or copies of a book, newspaper, etc., printed from one set of type at one time; or a version of anything, printed or not, presented to the public: the newest edition of a popular musical revue.

Basically, edition is used primarily when talking about a version of a book or music revue presented to the public.

"That can't be the same book," Scully insisted. "The one I found had a prologue in it." She grabbed the book from Mulder's hand to take a better look. "This must be a newer edition."

"Just like that play the kids put on the other night?" Mulder asked with a concerned expression. "It's the same one they put on every time we see them, yet you still claim it's different every time. Are they acting out a different edition too?" He gave her a funny look, then asked, "Are you sure you're okay?"

There are many ways to remember which word to use, but maybe this will help. If the word you're looking for has anything to do with adding, use addition. If not, then edition is the word you're looking for.
