I think I understand what you're referring to now with the 'quotation marks', which is what I misread earlier. I was thinking you meant "speech marks", which is entirely different. Yes, obviously, the punctuation outside of quotation marks is different for Americans, then. I'd use it inside the quotation marks if it was part of the quotation, but outside to finish the sentence or section of writing. This is where you mean Americans use it inside no matter what, right? I totally didn't get that before, but understand it now. I know you're not trying to tell us what to do with our own fics, so I have to say that I couldn't manage that one anyway, it's just plain odd! But then so many Americanism are! ;-P (which is not to say that this info is not useful, my dear, because it definitely is!)
