I do the backward date thing, too, because it makes more sense! The American military also does it--I think because it operates in the international arena. (I do use the abbreviation for the month--26 Apr 2008--to prevent ambiguity.)
High levels of consumption of British books/news/television have messed with my American-meter some, too. ;-)
