I can definitely see how that would be cringe-worthy! I admit, though, that I use that word a lot as a way to tell people to wait a minute. I think that "Un momento" is Spanish for "one minute." I could be wrong, as I brought that phrase all the way from my high school Spanish days, so please forgive me if I am.

But you are right when the word is used to describe a memento!
